Sketchbooks are not only where I develop my ideas and designs - they are bound environments in which I curate swatches and exercise drawing rituals of repetition for no other reason than an enjoyment of the act of doodling. The instinctive freedom this gives me creates a balance and respite in between more concentrated observational studies. ‘The act of filling’ when creating mark-making pages within my sketchbooks is both comforting and productive.
Handheld containers of marked time and detailed substance, I always revisit my sketchbooks to discover their content anew. They provide me with a ready-to-go archive of backgrounds, features and form that I can build upon or manipulate depending on the new illustration / design I am working on at the time.
